Sen. Daley honors Donate Life Month, seeks to increase organ donor registry participation

LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Senate on Wednesday adopted Sen. Kevin Daley’s resolution to recognize April 2025 as National Donate Life Month.

“The generous gift of organ, tissue and eye donation can provide families that are tragically confronted by the death of a loved one with the comfort of knowing the gift of donated organs and tissues will provide another person with renewed hope for a healthy life,” said Daley, R-Lum. “One person donating their organs can help to save the lives of eight others.”

Senate Resolution 25 encourages “all residents to join the Michigan Organ Donor Registry, share their decision with their families, friends, and colleagues, and encourage them to do the same.”

Daley has also introduced legislation with Sen. Joseph Bellino, R-Monroe, to help increase participation in the organ donor registry. Senate Bills 205 and 206 would encourage doctors to hand out information about organ donation to patients and schools to provide informational presentations on the merits of organ donation.

“Organ donation is especially important to me and very near to my heart,” Daley said. “My son Thomas passed away over 14 years ago. Thomas’s heart, liver, kidneys, and his legacy, have lived on in the lives of others.”

Gift of Life Michigan reports that 131 lives are saved each day by organ transplants throughout the United States. More than 9,000 patients in Michigan have received a life-saving organ transplant in the past 10 years.
