Bellino bill would help students in military families

LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Joseph Bellino on Wednesday introduced legislation to support students of military families when they move to a new school in Michigan.

“Children in military families can face significant learning challenges when they enter a new school as a result of their service mom or dad having to relocate due to a new duty station assignment,” said Bellino, R-Monroe. “When we support our military personnel, we must also support their families during these changes.

“This legislation would have Michigan join over 40 other states, like Ohio, in establishing a Purple Star Program to help meet challenges, such as understanding high school graduation requirements, addressing problems with course placements and helping children connect socially or emotionally at their new school.”

According to the Military State Policy Source, the average military-connected child will experience six to nine different schools during their K-12 education.

Senate Bill 211 would require the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) to establish a Purple Star Program in the state and prepare for its implementation by Jan. 1, 2026.

Under the bill, a school could receive a Purple Star designation if they:

  • Apply to the MDE for the designation.
  • Assign a staff member to be a military liaison.
  • Provide easily accessible information for families on the district website.
  • Maintain a transition program for students.
  • Provide specialized training for staff.
